Escape the day, the new album by singer-songwriter Bernard Brogue is a CD you should listen while driving through Scotland. Along the typical stonewalls, hills, ranging sheep, and fierce looking hairycoos. It is something Bernard may do during his vist to the country. Bernard Brogue brings a special mix of music from the west and a hint of Celtic influences. Besides that Tom Janssen leaves his mark on the totalsound with his beautiful fretless basslines.Further provides Brogue on his CD a platform to guestmusicians, amongst them singer Kaz-Lux. Apart from this are on the CD many quiet songs and the CD could have had more songs like the opener A stranger in this world. On the other hand, with these quiet songs you can enjoy dreaming away amidst the Scottish scenery. Now this is quite dangerous whilst drinving. Much safer it is to do this whith a good single malt under your nose. And certainly as effective.

Bernard Brogue — Escape the day
Bernard Brogue belongs to the British “school”of singer-songwriters like John Martyn, Nick Drake and Alan Taylor. He travels between The Netherland and Great Britain regularly where he is quite popular in pubs and on festivals. Since 2001 he performs with Vincent Gal on drums and Tom Janssen on fretless bass and keyboards. On this CD he is accompanied by quite a few guestmusicians f.e. Kaz Lux (!, former member of the Dutch band Brainbox , where also Jan Akkerman took part of) who makes his remarkable contribution to the mysterious duet “Genocide”. On this CD are 13 self penned compositions, well produced and with a solid band which seamlessly enwraps Bernard Brogue his warm intimate, sometimes a bit timid, voice in a warm and comfortable bath. The music inhibits elements of pop and jazz with a melancholic red line through all the songs always with a lot of atmosphere. The album has been mixed pretty dry and kept direct which contributes a lot to this music. Very beautiful.

“Singer-songwriter Bernard Brogue travels frequently between Holland and Scotland and is very much appreciated in the venues there. The album Escape the day reveals why. Especially if Bernard's sings with his warm voice about the pink moon there is a reference to Nick Drake. The absolutely beautiful melodies in which you can hear influences of pop and jazz are more lightfooted though, which makes he chooses more for the style of Luka Bloom. Although, this remains spherical music for late in the evening.”

Singer-songwriter Bernard Brogue reist regelmatig op en neer tussen Nederland en Groot-Brittannië. In Schotland is hij een graag geziene gast in kroegen en op festivals. Het album Escape the Day laat horen waarom. Vooral als de warme stem van Broque in het nummer I know You’re Different over een roze maan zingt, ligt de vergelijking met Nick Drake voor de hand. De absoluut fraaie melodieën, waarin ook wat jazz- en aanstekelijke popinvloeden zijn te horen, zijn echter veel lichtvoetiger van aard, waardoor Brogue meer de kant kiest van Luka Bloom. Dit blijft echter sfeervolle muziek voor laat op de avond.

Bernard Brogue Band - Time change (mini-CD)
Gitarist/singer/songwriter Bernard Brogue is geen onbekende naam binnen de Nederlandse folkscene. Geïnspireerd door mensen als Nick Drake en John Martyn gaat het bij Brogue, net als bij zijn inspirators, om meer dan alleen het liedje. Vooral de instrumentale sfeeropbouw en sound spelen bij hen een minstens zo belangrijke rol. Op deze mini-CD laat Brogue zich met drie nummers en twee begenadigde begeleiders horen. Vooral fretloze bassist Tom Janssen bepaalt mede de sfeer op dit sterke plaatje. En hier blijkt dat drie nummers ook voldoende kan zijn om te overtuigen. Laat maar binnenkomen in de Veelbelovende Vijf....

Bernard Brogue is al eventjes bezig met het maken van muziek. De singer/songwriter tourde al regelmatig door Groot-Brittanië en dan met name in Schotland. Hij speelde er in legendarische clubs en op gerenommeerde festivals. Afgaande op deze nieuwe demo is deze overzeese belangstelling meer dan terecht. Op 'Time Change' staan vier liedjes, waarvan het titelnummer 'Time Change' het sterkste is. Maar ook opener 'A stranger in this world' mag er zijn met zijn mooie melodieën en fijne arrangementen. De stemkleur van Bernard bevindt zich ergens tussen de singer/songwriters Nick Drake en Luka Bloom in. Qua opbouw van de songs en de manier van plaatsen van woorden in een zanglijn roept Brogue voornamelijk de vergelijking met Drake op.
Sinds enkele jaren wordt Bernard muzikaal bijgestaan door drummer Vincent Gal en bassist/toetsenist Tom Janssen. Met name toetsenist Janssen heeft op enkele nummers een nogal opvallende rol. De jazzy invloeden die Brogue ook in zijn muziek naar voren wil laten komen worden voornamelijk ingevuld door het goede en sfeervolle toetsenspel. Op het nummer 'Time Change' is een grote rol weggelegd voor saxofonist Rob Lokhorst. Hij zorgt hiermee voor een extra jazzy component in de muziek. Deze nieuwe demo van de Bernard Brogue Band smaakt dus duidelijk naar meer. De grote vraag is dan ook: waarom is dit niet een volledig album geworden?
